Magnetism marks the meeting of two singular artists in experimental music. It brings together Drew McDowall’s roots in the industrial vanguard of Coil and Psychic TV with Kali Malone’s foundation in contemporary organ composition, just intonation, and electroacoustic music, uniting two generations in a deeply complementary partnership.

On Magnetism, Malone’s poignant melodies manifest within McDowall’s signature timbral synthesis, forming a unified voice that resonates with clarity and vitality.

Although recorded in just a matter of days, the project grew out of a decade-long friendship, shaped by ongoing conversations about music and life, and by years of witnessing and supporting one another’s artistic practice and personal evolution. “We put trust in each other, in our own domains and our unique strengths,” They say about the recording process. It was an experience full of the kind of intuition and confidence that they attribute to their friendship.

The album began spontaneously in McDowall’s Brooklyn studio, where the foundation of the music emerged almost instantly. The pair decided they would impose certain limitations on their improvisations; they programmed bespoke tunings on a monophonic modular synth patch and recorded performance takes without overdubs. “Playing this music felt like singing, as I freely followed my internal voice,” says Kali. Reaching for those melodies was, again, something that felt instinctive, like uncovering a long-forgotten memory. She continues, “I had been holding a lot of those melodies inside of me for so long."

McDowall’s synthesis approach employs Karplus–Strong synthesis, delay, and distortion, which he shapes with an intuitive touch, gracefully morphing Malone’s motifs. "The music is surprisingly accessible even though some of the timbres are extreme,” Drew says, “it's not foreboding or even opaque. We might even be dabbling with pop sentiments." After leaving the recordings untouched for a year, they returned to find the music transformed: “It felt like it had taken on some uncanny, mystical quality.”

Charged by the gravitational pull of repetition, resonance, and saturation, Magnetism pulses as a living music that captivates the senses and lingers long in the mind after the final notes fade.
