Reviewer: Tommy Tucker "aquatic avenger" (Augusta, GA USA) - See all my reviews

This cd was a total waste of money, and I can't believe these guys are passing this off as music. I have a pretty open mind when it comes to music, and I like a lot of releases on the Hydrahead label like; Jesu, Pelican, Isis, and Old man Gloom, etc. This cd is composed of some guy screaming poetry, and an occasional bang on a drum or guitar. There's no music whatsoever- it's like 40 minutes of some guy yelling. Some people might call this art, but I call it boring and a rip off.

Alma Enterprises Gallery
2nd September - 25th September 2005
PRIVATE VIEW THURSDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 6PM-9PM
FOLLOWED BY CONCERT/NOISE ACTION AT BISTROTHEQUE 9- MIDNIGHT, 23-27 WADESON STREET, LONDON E2

A manifestation of sound art and noise-love in a multidisciplinary collaboration between international artists Bill Bowen, Matt Bua, Clive Murphy, Stephen O'Malley, Dylan Nyoukis, Chris Peck, Savage Pencil, Mr Pippin, Fritz Welch and Clare Quilty. The exhibition explores the potential use of sound, noise and music as tools for warping reality and shifting time.

The first part of the exhibition consists of a collaborative sound/noise sculpture using distinct elements including computer-controlled speakers, automated percussion devices and composite junk imbedded into the site as an architectural intervention.

The second part of the exhibition consists of walldrawings, paintings, collages and posters dealing with music and noise as subject. These elements surround the sculpture on the walls, both illustrating its conceptual focus and contextualizing its anarchic sprawl.

The private view on Thursday 1st September will be followed by a concert/sound action featuring Pleasure-Drenching Improvers, Dylan Nyoukis & Stefan Jaworzyn, The Nekid Kidmen and DJ Paul Noble at Bistrotheque, 23-27 Wadeson Street from 9pm to midnight.

RIP PIGGY 27 08 2005
VOIVOD Guitarist DENIS 'PIGGY' D'AMOUR Dead Of Colon Cancer - Aug. 27, 2005

VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour passed away Friday night (August 26) at approximately 11:45 p.m. due to complications from advanced colon cancer — so advanced that the disease had spread to his liver. D'Amour slipped into a coma Thursday night and died less than 24 hours later in the palliative care unit of a Montreal hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 45 years old.

Quebec City newspaper Le Soleil reported yesterday that D'Amour — who was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier in the summer — first entered the hospital for a routine operation, but several complications led his doctors to suspect more problems. Then the grim verdict was revealed: the cancer, already too advanced, was inoperable.

Only two months ago, D'Amour was in the studio working on the 14th album from the Canadian thrash-metal pioneers VOIVOD. More than two dozen tracks are believed to have been demoed for the CD, for which the group recently inked a deal with The End Records. However, the band were forced to put studio work on hold while bassist Jason Newsted (ex-METALLICA) was treated for tendonitis.

In a recent interview with Billboard.com, Newsted spoke about the material slated to appear on the group's next CD. "It's the most complete demos I've ever been involved in," he said. "[VOIVOD singer] Snake has already chosen his effects — exact timing of milliseconds for delay. We've had a long time to develop the demos, so there's about 23 or 25 songs that are absolutely listenable right now."

Newsted was a huge fan of VOIVOD before he was invited to join and he remains a great admirer to this day. "They created something a long, long time ago that may have been emulated many, many times since — but nobody can do it like the original," he offered.

Prior to his hospitalization, D'Amour laid down guitar tracks for a reunion CD from the legendary AUT'CHOSE, a '70s band from Montreal. That album is expected to surface next summer.

LOS ANGELES, California — April 11, 2005 — ZU33 has recently optioned the award-winning book LORDS OF CHAOS, published by Feral House Press, for a narrative film treatment. Director Hans Fjellestad and Producer Ryan Page are currently working on the screenplay with Writer/Publisher Adam Parfrey.

Equal parts music, true crime, occult, and subcultural anthropology, the book by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind chronicles the Norwegian Black Metal music scene in the early 1990's. Since that time, nearly 100 churches have been torched and desecrated by adherents of Black Metal, the most extreme form of underground music on the planet. In an escalating unholy war, Black Metal bands and their obsessive fans have left a grim egacy of suicide, murder and terrorism spreading from Norway to Germany, Russia, America and beyond. The feature film will focus on the relationship between legendary figures Varg Vikernes and Euronymous and the rest of the "Black Circle" as they wage war against the powers thatbe in their native country.

Hans Fjellestad will make his feature film directorial debut with LORDS OF CHAOS after two highly successful and critically acclaimed documentary
films, MOOG (2004/Plexifilm) and FRONTIER LIFE (2002/Third World Newsreel).

_The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants: Ethnopharmacology and Its
Applications_
By Christian Rätsch
Foreword by Albert Hofmann
Translated by John R. Baker, with assistance from Annabel Lee and
Cornelia Ballent

ISBN: 0-89281-978-2

Hardcover, 944 pages; 8.50 (width) x 11.00 (height)
797 color photographs and 645 b&w illustrations
Park Street Press, $125.00

The most comprehensive guide to the botany, history, distribution, and cultivation of all known psychoactive plants

In the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful plants--those known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness--have traditionally been regarded as sacred. In _The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants_ Christian Rätsch details the botany, history, distribution, cultivation, and preparation and dosage of more than 400 psychoactive plants. He discusses their ritual and medicinal usage, cultural artifacts made from these plants, and works of art that either represent or have been inspired by them. The author begins with 168 of the most well-known psychoactives--such as cannabis, datura, and papaver--then presents 133 lesser known substances as well as additional plants known as “legal highs,” plants known only from mythological contexts and literature, and plant
products that include substances such as ayahuasca, incense, and soma. The text is lavishly illustrated with 800 color photographs--many of which are from the author’s extensive fieldwork around the world--showing the people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the world’s sacred psychoactives.

Christian Rätsch, Ph.D., is a world-renowned anthropologist and ethnopharmacologist who specializes in the shamanic uses of plants. He is the author of Marijuana Medicine and coauthor of Plants of the Gods, Shamanism and Tantra in the Himalayas, and Witchcraft Medicine. He lives in Hamburg, Germany, and lectures around the world.

Sheep in Wolf's Clothing
How a high school teacher from Skokie passed for cantankerous guitar genius John Fahey.

Last year Fantasy Records released The Best of John Fahey Vol. 2: 1963-1983, positioning it as an overdue follow-up to a Fahey best-of from 1977. Fahey, the founding father of the "American primitive" steel-stringed acoustic guitar style, had died in 2001, but the label, with access to his enormous archive of tapes, included three unreleased tracks: two rerecordings of Fahey classics from the early 60s and an original called "Tuff" that no one had heard before. But it's not Fahey playing on those tracks, and "Tuff" isn't his song. All three are the work of Charlie Schmidt, a 42-year-old high school teacher who lives in Skokie.

A friend and sometime student of the innovative guitarist, Schmidt recorded the material in 1993 as part of a prank Fahey hoped to play on Shanachie, his label at the time. Fahey had a history of "sowing confusion and blurring attribution," as Schmidt puts it -- he credited a performance on one of his records to a mentor he'd invented for himself, an old black undertaker named Blind Joe Death, and in his liner notes he parodied the mythmaking impulse of folk revivalists, claiming to have made his first guitar from a baby's coffin. But he never got the chance to pass Schmidt's tapes off as his own, and they collected dust for a decade -- until the producers of last year's compilation, fooled by the exactitude of Schmidt's Fahey impression, took the bait. (Schmidt has sorted things out with Fahey's music publisher and informed Fantasy of the mistake, but the label has yet to respond.)
