RIP Charlie Gocher 22 March 2007
 Hello friends, this is one of those e-mails you hope you never have to send but.....

With deep regret, we must announce that Charles Gocher passed away on February 19th in Seattle from a long battle with cancer at the age of 54. He went peacefully with friends at his side. He is survived by the two of us who adopted him as a brother 25 years ago and his many friends around the world. He will be missed more than most could ever know. Our thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement during the past three, very difficult years. Many of you were not aware that Charles was ill and that’s because he wanted it that way. Knowing Charlie as we did, we're sure he's already working on new material. We're sorry we can't talk to everybody personally right now as opposed to a blanket electronic statement such as this...we just need a little bit of time to deal with everything. Details of a memorial in his honor will hopefully be announced soon.

 Morning Ragas
Sunday, 6:00am - 8:00am
The sister show to Raag Aur Taal, this show focuses exclusively on the ragas of classical Indian music that are traditionally listened to at dawn or during the early morning. The raga is not a tune, melody, scale, mode, or any concept for which an English word exists. Instead, a raag functions both as description and prescription; it describes a general melodic practice, while it prescribes rules on how to build a certain melody. Compositions in Indian classical music are built on the rules of a raag. The Hindi/Urdu word "raag" is derived from the Sanskrit "raga" which means "color, or passion." The notion of the morning raga may then be thought of as an aural method of coloring the mind of the listener, through a combination of various acoustic characteristics, with sentiments that complement the morning atmosphere.

Raag Aur Taal
Sunday, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Previously known as Garam Masala, Raag Aur Taal explores the sounds and rich cultural heritage of South Asia with hosts Pooja Agarwal and Swarup Swaminathan. The term "Raag Aur Taal" roughly translates to "melody and rhythm," indicating the classical nature of this program. Each week, we journey into the classical music traditions of the Indian subcontinent, as well as other artistic forms including dance and theater. Devotional and folk music is occasionally explored as well. The program also hosts the much loved annual Festival of South Asian Music each August. You can contact Raag Aur Taal with any questions at raagaurtaal@gmail.com.

:::::::::

A couple intense beautiful radio shows happening each Sunday on the Columbia University Station WKCR 89.9FM in New Yawk.

The station may be most popularized by it's broadcasts hosted by Phil Schaap, one of the world's leading jazz historians. Focusing on figures like Bird, Dizzy Gillespie, etc in extraordinary detail these shows are intensely interesting in their own right, especially by the purely technical angles of listening analysis Schaap employs. Something to be learned there.

But the raga shows are just pure bliss.

The station streams live on the web too:

PITCHFORK WEBSTER HALL REVIEW

What can I say? I've always loved Gang Gang Dance's ability to create real-time collage-- those celebratory switches from a split kaleidoscope soundtracked by Punjabi MC to blood-soaked terror. Take that, Girl Talk. But hell, when did Liz Bougatsos become the city's most captivating front woman? We're talking serious avant-diva action! Injecting some vibrancy into Webster Hall's vast air, she donned a Ghostface Killah t-shirt as dress (fashionable torn shoulder showing), strange weight-lifter pajama pants, and boots. The band's second-best fashion move: Tim Dewitt's high back drums. The quartet opened on an Enya atmospheric tip before digging into God's Money's refracted, cat-and-mouse punk-dub: A slithery beast of fainting steam, tumbling calypso, wicked Björkian balladeering, slinky Greek musicals, and Hot 97 (Brian DeGraw = Timbaland).

Tracklist: Nifelheim - Gates of Damnation, Sadistik Exekution - Proxima Centauri / Demon with Wings

Nifelheim / Volcano - Thunder Metal 7"
The 7" is limited to 900 copies on black vinyl, suitably baptized Thunder Metal, features two new tracks from each horde; brazilian black metal legends, Volcano presents their most evil sounding and ripping stuff since "Bloody Vengeance" while Nifelheim's contributions pisses over all lame attempts at entering the black throne that's been made in their six year of relative absence. The new songs includes some of the best riffs since "Don't Break the Oath"
