Tokyo’s Ai Aso (朝生愛, Asō Ai) is a Japanese psychedelic pop singer-songwriter whose work has a whisper-thin acid folk quality to it. She started performing as a solo singer around 2000. Her solo work, infrequent collaborations with White Heaven members You Ishihara and Michio Kurihara, Yurayura Teikoku, and Boris bring a level of fragility and hypnotism to the stage recalling lost memories, small flavors of COIL and serial playing on the verge of evaporation.

As for her recent activities, she has performed on bills together with Sunn O))), Boris, Masaki Batoh (Ghost), Touri Kudoh, Kim Doo Soo, Mark Fry, Simon Finn etc.

"Insofar they may expand on the O))) principles albeit perhaps a more sculptural and angular direction; the extended solid and geometric aspects of the guitar and amplifiers, sound pressure, volume and temporal structure as ambiguous and solitary form."

Stephen O’Malley (b. 1974) was born in New Hampshire, USA and raised in Seattle. He eventually spent a decade in New York and presently is based in Paris. As a composer and musician he has been involved in hundreds of concerts and performances around the world since 1993. ALUK TODOLO (FR) is an instrumental power trio performing Occult Rock since 2004. Their music is a methodical exploration of the powers of musical trance. Part occult black metal fiend and part snide kraut menace, the band conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings.

ALUK TODOLO reduces psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, in which dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. The band’s sound is monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming: a dangerous, noxious coil of all things black.

The name ALUK TODOLO was brought back from a mountainous region of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, it’s an ancient religion with animist beliefs meaning «the Way of the Ancestors».

J.R. MOORES's review of SUNN O))) & ULVER's "Terrestrials" for DROWNED IN SOUND

Many pseudo-Cope-isms in this amusing and well crafted review of "Terrestrials".

Amazing line: "It’s just that, sometimes, if you’re not too careful, when you think you’re pushing the envelope into the letterbox of 'RESPECTABLE ARTY MUSIC', you suddenly realise you’ve got the wrong address altogether and have only gone and shoved all your mail into the light jazz pigeon hole."

Ain't that the truth brother!

Tasmanian black metal artist Striborg doesn't play very often, however last weekend he treated us to a set entitled Purifying The River Of Tears, written in homage to the Derwent River to be played at MONA for the MONA FOMA festival. Emerging from behind the MONA building through the riverside fog, Sin Nanna (Striborg) and a string quartet played beside the Wim Delvoye Gothic Chapel where they performed for 30 minutes. It was fantastic. -Ben Butcher

EMS 50 / IDEOLOGIC ORGAN #6: ÁKOS RÓZMANN'S IMAGES OF THE DREAM AND DEATH - LIVE DIFFUSION BY MATS LINDSTRÖM at CAFE OTO, LONDON

rozmann_flyer.jpg

EMS 50 / Ideologic Organ #6: Ákos Rózmann's Images of the Dream and Death - live diffusion by Mats Lindström

Tuesday 11 March 2014
Door Times : 8pm
Tickets : £5 adv / £7 on the door

EMS 50 two-event pass: £11

Mats Lindström presents a live multi-channel diffusion of the final, unabridged version of Hungarian composer Ákos Rózmann's masterwork Images of the Dream and Death to celebrate EMS at 50. This will also be number 6 in the Ideologic Organ series of events curated by SUNN O)))'s Stephen O'Malley at Cafe OTO.

Mats Lindström will also be giving a free public talk at Goldsmiths College on Monday 10 March from 2-4pm.
Address: Cinema, Richard Hoggart Building, Goldsmiths, University of London.

ÁKOS RÓZMANN

Ákos Rózmann was born in Hungary in 1939. He studied composition and took his organist’s and composer’s diploma at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Between 1971 and 1974 he studied composition with Ingvar Lidholm at the State Academy of Music in Stockholm. He became organist of the Catholic Cathedral in Stockholm in 1978.

"The lingering feeling after hearing the works of Ákos Rózmann is the intangibility of naming what that lingering feeling is. Anyone who hears his music is moved, in as many ways possible, but why they have been moved and where to, is as difficult to put a finger on as to catch a small fleck in a bowl of water, always in sight, but forever slipping from our grasp." - Jim O'Rourke

The uncompromising nature of Rózmann’s character can easily be traced both in the reports about his behaviour and in his music. As a fervent devotee of his work, he shut himself up in windowless studios for hours, often working until late in the night. In his late years he didn’t participate in the events of official musical life, he didn’t even attend his own premieres. In his work, he looked neither for the approval of the professional, nor for the pleasure of the audience. The only thing that counted was the perfect articulation of his vision.

This vision was inspired by the (recorded) sound itself, originating from many different sources. As this raw material had been worked out and made to be specially plastic, an extremely powerful drama evolved, especially in Rózmann’s large-scale works. A drama that reproduces the most basic conflicts of human existence, gives a shocking insight to its darkest dephts, and shows that sin and purity, darkness and light walk side by side, their qualities mutually presupposing each other. The play is often elaborated in a symbolical and pictorial way with quotations from Buddhist and Christian liturgical music on one side, violent clashing, snarling and devilish laughter on the other. Put between these forces, the cry of the struggling human soul is heard.

MATS LINDSTRÖM

Mats Lindström works as a composer and a musician, often with strains of live-electronics. He often works with intermedia, scenic elements and visual arts as a complement to the music, and has worked both with music for concerts, theatre and dance as well as radio-art and sound installations. Formerly an engineer in the electronics industry Lindström has designed and constructed a number of unique electronic musical instruments and apparatuses. His LP 'МИГ' - including recordings from the Aviation Engines Museum in St Petersburg and pieces recorded for theatre and at Stockholm's EMS Elektronmusikstudion was released on Ideologic Organ in 2012.
