MAXIMUM VOLUME YIELDS MAXIMUM RESULTS

Mika Vanio and Stephen O'Malley are both seminal figures in the experimental underground   having established themselves in the epoch defining acts Pan sonic and sunnO)). Whilst they explored different worlds, one abstracted guitar drone metal, the other hard rhythms and analog atmospheres, there was always an underlying thread which bound both acts: massive blocks of sound, vast cavernous spaces, a sense of drama and the foreboding along with a deep exploration of the physical experience unlike any previously experienced.

Pan sonic and sunnO))) first collaborated together on a Suicide cover version for a Blast First Petite series in 2007/8, and following this Mika and Stephen decided to collaborate further with what eventually became the ÄÄNIPÄÄ sessions. Recorded at Einstürzende Neubauten's andereBaustelle Tonstudio in Berlin and mixed at Avast! (Soundgarden, Earth) in Seattle over an extended period the results see individual approaches coalesce into a monumental whole. The signature motifs of both players are to be found here: the sparse crushing rhythms of Vanio's minimalist techno alongside the black hole drones of O'Malley's guitar workouts. It is the alchemical combination of these  element that shifts this release into a new world of burning intensity.

At once unholy and emotional 'Through a Pre-Memory' takes the listener on a vast journey. On 'Toward All Thresholds' immense bleak landscapes succumb to sparse glacial rhythms. 'Mirror of Mirror Dreams' holds itself in reflective terrain as string arrangements by Eyvind Kang are played with Moriah Neils (contrabass) and Maria Scherer Wilson's (cello) providing desolate strokes to the cleansing ambient landscape preceding it. A new level of terror is reached on the epic 'Muse' and 'Watch over Stillness / Matters Principle' as the writings of Russian modernist poet Anna Akhmatova are put to music and sung/spoken/screamed by Alan Dubin (Khanate / GNAW / O.L.D). These monumental texts which book end this lp are at once ravenous and destructive. The shredding light shining through an impossible black.

'Through a Pre-Memory' is a deep immersive experience from two of the most extreme forward thinking music/sound practitioners today.

Excerpts from the premiere screening of Tempestarii at CCR Opderschmelz, Dudelange, Luxembourg on October 25.

Tempestarii – Video by Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert. With live music by Stephen O’Malley + Prelude: The Breath of Charybdis curated by Amelia Ishmael + DISintegration by Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert. With Stephen O’Malley.

Performance night: Friday 25 October
8 PM - Prelude: The Breath of Charybdis.
8.45 PM – Tempestarii
Exhibition: DISintegration, Saturday October 26 - Sunday, November 03, 2013: Open daily 10 AM - 10 PM

Within its Touch of Noir Festival, the CCR Opderschmelz Dudelange will host a series of events from 25 October–3 November directed by Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert. Spanning ten days, the artists present alchemical bursts of light, sound, and space to enliven and empower the night air, and charge it with dynamic meaning. The opening performance will introduce the world premier of Bouschet and Hilbert’s video Tempestarii, accompanied by live music performance by Stephen O’Malley. This premier will be preceded by Prelude: Breath of Charybdis, a program of videos curated by Amelia Ishmael. Together, the artists will focus and direct our ideas, spirit, and energy on the complex potential and creativity of the darker months to come. Following the performance, the video and sound installation DISintegration will continue until the final night. When the events have run their course, the galleries will turn dark and silent once more. Yet the space around them will be transformed; released.

Prelude: The Breath of Charybdis
Curated by Amelia Ishmael
Presenting videos by Semiconductor, Jon Cates, and Aldo Tambellini
25 October, 8 PM

Prelude: The Breath of Charybdis draws upon the concept of the maelström to evoke a dynamic environment where currents between potential and actual, spectral and material, dark and light, and sonic and silent are raised to mountainous heights. It is not the embodied Charybdis that this program will account for, but rather her inspiration: a terrain within which tempestarii might dwell. The three videos presented—by Semiconductor, Jon Cates, and Aldo Tambellini—evidence Charybdis’s breath through mountainous waves of electromagnetic energy.

Tempestarii
Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert
With live music by Stephen O’Malley
25 October, 2013 8.45PM

Dawn spreads its luminous rays across the coast of Iceland, to reveal a sorcerer standing between wine-dark sea and mountainous black rock. He is tempestarii, a figure of medieval lore, undertaking a primitive rite manifested to conjure a storm. The tides of the deep ocean breathe heavily rising and falling across the cinema screen with amplifying power, as the weather-maker beats a mysterious sack against the monolithic cliffs with powerful repetition. As a magical tool, this sack contains forceful winds pulled from each corner of world. As an analogy, it is aligned with the revolutionary transformations of nature by water, air, solar radiation, and geological shifts and filled with the vast potential of man’s will in alliance with Nature. As an omen, the tempestarii signals profound change on both physical and metaphysical realms.
Presented as both a live performance and an installation, Tempestarii is an immersive experience of video and sound. By demonstrating contemporary art as meteorological sorcery and political activism, the duo Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert raise a storm and blacken the air.

DISintegration
Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert
With Stephen O’Malley
Saturday, October 26 - Sunday, November 03, 2013
Monday - Sunday 10:00 A.M. - 10:00 P.M.

Cast from the premiere performance, Tempestarii will sustain at CCRD in the form of a video and sound exhibition. The duration of the video is designed to consume the entire run of the exhibition period: 9 days, or 108 hours. Within this span of time, Tempestarii will undergo continual change. The video will loop, in a way, yet each iteration is parasitically copied from the preceding version. Video files disintegrate when they are copied again and again, more and more pixels go missing. The resulting loss of definition, as well as parasitic interferences, gradually darken the images until they dissolve into blackness.
