Gisèle Vienne @ Kunstenfestival/Playground Leuven November 2012

November 8 - December 16
STUK Expozaal
THROUGH THEIR TEARS is an exhibition by French artist/choreographer Gisèle Vienne. She looks at the exhibition space with a dramaturgic view, and therefore considers the space to be a performance. That way, she can bring together artists who she regularly collaborated with in the past, like American author Dennis Cooper, musicians Stephen O’Malley and Peter Rehberg, light technician Patrick Riou and actor Jonathan Capdevielle.

The exhibition is built around two installations. LAST SPRING: A Prequel was shown earlier on the latest Whitney Biennial (NY) and refers to the history of mechanical theater. A ventriloquizing adolescent in the form of a life-size animated doll performs a schizophrenic dialogue with a hand puppet. THROUGH THEIR TEARS is a photographic series of Gisèle Vienne and Dennis Cooper that starts from a series of pictures and dolls made by Vienne.

Both works form a research into the artists’ shared fascination for picturing troubled adolescents and their urge for intensity and self-destruction. In a romantic, dream-like way, they show the dark sides of youth: sadness, feeling bad, urges for destruction. The works are a staggering and dizzying mirror, making us think about the veracity of our interpretations and perception. The exhibition THROUGH THEIR TEARS brings those two projects together in a permanently bewitched space.

This exhibition at STUK continues until 16.12.2012.
