Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda has conceived an exhibition for the Hamburger Bahnhof that, for the first time, compositionally unites the two symmetrical halls on the upper level of the museum’s east and west wings. The exhibition’s title "db" (abbr. for decibel) refers to this symmetry while simultaneously indicating the complementary relationship between the two exhibition spaces. Ikeda has designed the white room and the black room as counterparts, not only physically (brightness, color), but also conceptually and perceptually. The project is a composition in which time and space are shaped through the most minimal use of sound, light and visual elements. It is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Germany.

The eponymous work "db" (2012) is centrally placed in both halls. In one room, it consists of a black super-directional parabolic loudspeaker that projects a pure wave of sound into the white space; in the other room, a powerful searchlight projects a beam of white light into the black space. The sound in the white room is reduced to a standing sine wave, the simplest musical building block. Every movement by a visitor alters the sonic field, allowing it to be experienced individually. The beam of light in the black room is directed through a hole in a wall at one end of the space and thus becomes perceptible as a white circle. The beam consists of pure white light that, analogously to white noise, contains all the colors of the spectrum. Here, too, visitors’ movements alter the space; whenever they cross the beam of light, reflections illuminate the dark room.

Two other work complexes in the exhibition, "the irreducible [nº1-10]" (2009) and "the transcendental [nº4]" (2012), also complement each other. In the white room, the ten-part pigment print series "the irreducible", which consists of over 1 million digits each rendered in black on black stands in contrast to the ten video projections of "the transcendental" in the black room. There, a transcendental number consisting of an infinite number of digits is luminously represented, zooming by at an ultra-fast frame rate while generating sounds in real time. Both works involve the representation of infinity based on mathematical research. Here the visitor can see respectively hear a tiny fragment of this endlessness in each space, as if through a window frame in the wall.

Since the mid-1990s, Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966, lives in Paris) has been among the foremost international composers and artists in the realm of cutting-edge digital technologies and their integration into visual and acoustic presentations. His works are based on spatiotemporal compositions in which the musical and visual material is reduced to a minimum: sine waves, sound pulses, pixels of light and numerical data. He investigates sound, time and space on the basis of mathematical methods and transforms them in his concerts and installations into an intense experience for the audience.

The exhibition "db" by Ryoji Ikeda is the latest project in the "Works of Music by Visual Artists" series, which Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V. has presented in collaboration with the Nationalgalerie Berlin since 1999 and, since 2002, also with MaerzMusik, the contemporary music festival of the Berliner Festspiele. Since the start of the series, musical works and installations have already been presented by: Hanne Darboven, Yves Klein, Hermann Nitsch, Rodney Graham, Stephen Prina, Lawrence Weiner / Peter Gordon, Christian Marclay, Käthe Kruse, Carsten Nicolai, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Cory Arcangel, and Egill Sæbjörnsson & Marcia Moraes.

Timo Ketola 1st draft for TRANSMISSIONS V art commission

Very pleased to be working together with Timo Ketola once again... this time on the poster artwork for TRANSMISSIONS V festival in Ravenna this March (which I am also co-curating). The visual side is a sort of co-art direction, where I will also do the typography (but Ketola does the real manifestation work obviously). Timo permits me to post the drafts. Very very interesting to converse and work together with this man. DAVTHVS!

Whitney Biennial 2012

Will be exhibiting at Whitney Biennial this year on a project directed by Gisèle Vienne. Peter Rehberg and I created the sound design for her "LAST SPRING: A Prequel" installation. Dennis Cooper wrote a great text which is narrated by one of Gisèle's AUTOMAT DOLLS. In the set there is also a large wall drawing which was designed by myself.

Info on the Biennial:

The Whitney Museum of American Art has announced the list of artists participating in the upcoming 2012 Whitney Biennial, which takes place at the Whitney from March 1 through May 27, 2012, with some programs continuing through June 10. This is the seventy-sixth in the ongoing series of Biennials and Annuals presented by the Whitney since 1932, two years after the Museum was founded.

The Whitney Biennial is an exhibition held every two years in which the Museum gauges the current state of contemporary art in America. The 2012 Biennial is being curated by Elisabeth Sussman, Curator and Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney, and Jay Sanders, a freelance curator. The curators began working on the research and planning of the show in early December 2010. Fifty-one artists have been selected. The Biennial comprises work—including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations—from both emerging and established artists. In addition to visual artists, the exhibition includes a select group of filmmakers, choreographers, musicians, and playwrights. These multidisciplinary arts will be presented in a large open space in the Museum’s fourth floor galleries.

The curators are working on the Biennial’s film program with Ed Halter and Thomas Beard, the co-founders of Light Industry, a venue for film and electronic art in Brooklyn. More details on the artists, other Biennial projects, and the schedule of events will be released in January 2012.
CURATORIAL COLLABORATIONS

In addition to the artists listed above, the 2012 Biennial will present two special curatorial collaborations with external arts organizations: 

Arika

Arika, a UK-based group that organizes festivals of experimental music, moving image, and sound will present their first North American program as part of the 2012 Biennial. The collaboration will take the form of a week of performances, workshops, and conversations that will capture interesting threads in North American listening, including contemporary poetry, noise, and music. 

Artists Space Books and Talks

As a curatorial programming partner of 2012 Biennial, Artists Space Books and Talks in Tribeca will be the site of a weekly program, curated by Artists Space, focusing on key concerns from the work of the exhibiting artists, as well as from the Biennial as a whole. 

The fourth floor performance events will involve the artistic collaboration of Bentley Meeker.

Russian biologist Alexander Semenov graduated in 2007 from Moscow State University’s zoology department where he studied invertebrate animals. Specifically: squid brains. Now he works as the chief of his diving team at the White Sea Biological Station, camera always in-hand, where he’s captured some of these extraordinary photographs of jellyfish and other wildlife.
