Staring into the Sun is the latest ethno-folk cinema classic from Sublime Frequencies. Ethiopia is known to be one of the oldest areas inhabited by humans and presently has over 80 diverse ethnic groups. Photographer/filmmaker Olivia Wyatt explores 13 different tribes throughout Ethiopia in this visually stunning film. Traveling from the northern highlands to the lower Omo Valley, Wyatt brings together the worlds of Zar spirit possession; Hamer tribal wedding ceremonies; Borena water well polyphonic singing; wild hyena feedings; and bizarre Ethiopian TV segments; presenting an enchanting look at these ethereal images, landscapes and sounds from the horn of Africa. The tribes featured in this film are captured with an unflinching sense of realism and poetic admiration resulting in a visual and aural feast of the senses.

Land of the Songhai
A film By Hisham Mayet
30 minutes

Hisham Mayet's latest film explores the music and landscape of the Songhai, around the Niger River in Western Niger. Zarma mock possession hoedowns, Wodaabe trance vocal performances, Spirit possession ceremonies, Godje one sting laments, contigi string masters, comsaa griots and Sahel night markets create a bizarre and fascinating glimpse into the arid and culturally vibrant bend in the Niger river.

"Dreamlands" & Voice Crack

2567-1.jpg

2567-2.jpg

2567-3.jpg

The "Dreamlands" exhibition at Pompideau is one of the the bleakest Ive seen in a few years.

The exhibition begins a bit out of focus; the illusionary "utopian" homogenous environment initially pioneered in early Worlds Fair (a great sexualized presentation in 1939 by Dali is covered) and Coney Island / Disneyland presentations. Continuing across the 20th century clear through to a loss of contact with reality, full on globalization, hollywood idealism, architectural misrepresentation/fantasy and finally Las Vegas and Dubai.

These two kissing cousins of monolithic reprogrammed desire, excess and beacons of hopeful artificiality come across so bleak and unnaturally that a film of Walt Disney explaining his enthusiastic plans for EPCOT center seems tender and genuine in comparison.

After this a rainy Paris afternoon walk home rewarded all of this with a VOICE CRACK marathon:

Æthenor related SOMA interviews

2561-1.jpg

A couple of interviews I did for Norwegian press promoting the recent Æthenor concerts at Blå. One journalistic, one fan-based.

SUNN O))) vs Cause & Effect

2559-1.jpg

Cause & Effect presents 6 hours of music by Sunn O))) and others residing in their sonic solar system. Starting June 3rd on WRIR you can tune in your transistor in Richmond, VA to 97.3 FM or stream the show live anywhere else on the planet via www.wrir.org. The radio program Cause & Effect takes place every Thursday from 7PM to 9PM East Coast time and is hosted by Lightning’s Girl and Alex. They trace one artist’s musical roots each week and for the first time in the show’s history they will present a two part series, continuing with 2 more hours of Sunn O)))’s musical family tree on June 11th at the same time. The final 2 hours of music will be made available as a podcast only for your downloading pleasure and will posted on the Cause & Effect Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Cause-Effect/154284635236?ref=ts as well as http://www.lightningsgirl.com/ .

The best thing about doing a weekly radio show featuring one artist or group is that occasionally they are willing to work with us to build the set list. This week Greg and Stephen of Sunn o))) have supplied us with all sorts of lists of bands to build our set around. Not only will we be playing their favorite tracks from their discography but we will also be playing a crap ton of their previous bands and collaborations not to mention all the bands they have been influenced by and the groups that their peer group is composed of. The only drawback so far is that there are so much material to pick from that I don't know how for the life of me it will all fit in just two hours. Our show Cause & Effect is on WRIR (www.wrir.org every Thursday from 7PM to 9PM East Coast time)

This picture was taken by me a few years ago when Sunn o))) played the church in Philadelphia. One of them had hung their robe up backstage and I snapped off a shot of it with my Polaroid. (Captiva to be more sepcific.) When I scanned in the image, I played with it a bit and this was the final result. It has in turn become one of my favorite band related photos I can taken over the years. If for some reason you want to use it or repost it, that is fine and dandy. Just give me, Lightning's Girl the credit please.
