96 Gillespie presents our first solo showing of London's Savage Pencil

Savage Pencil presents ...
Creatures of the Night
This body of work furthers the artist’s interest in the imagery and iconography of Black Metal and the occult.

Fur and wings abound along with calligraphy, hidden messages and ciphers summoned from the subconscious, bringing the audience face to face with our collective nightmares. That these creatures of the night figure in the folklores of so many cultures gives them a resonance beyond the cult followers of Black Metal.

'A hound it was, an enormous coal-black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open mouth, its eyes glowed with a smouldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame.'

- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

opens saturday . nov 10 . 2007 . 7-9 pm

show runs nov 11 - dec 9 . 2007

96 Gillespie/The Wire Magazine present our first solo showing of veteran London based illustrator Edwin Pouncey aka Savage Pencil. Entitled 'Savage Pencil presents ... Creatures of the Night', this body of work furthers the artist’s interest in the imagery and iconography of Black Metal and the occult.

This exhibition features a range of new drawings and sculpture in which Pouncey's characteristically frantic and supernatural figures are cast as imaginary creatures of the night.

This output follows an intense period of method artmaking - fuelled by the sonic influence of Black Metal music – where his artwork is urged to flow into a visual stream of trance induced consciousness.

Savage Pencil, AKA Edwin Pouncey is resident illustrator at The Wire magazine and has published several books of illustration, including his "Corposemeat Comix" series. He hosts a radio show on Resonance FM, and has produced work for publications including the NME, Frieze, Juxtapoz, Kerrang, Mojo, Loaded and Bizarre. He holds a Masters degree from The Royal College of Art and lives and works in South London.

A contemporary and peer of Gary Panter and Bruno Richard, his work has appeared on albums covers for Sonic Youth (Death Valley 69, Drunken Butterly, Halloween), The Fall (Lie Dream of a Casino Soul) Rocket From The Crypt (On a Rope), Lee Renaldo (From Her To Infinity), and Big Black (Headache).

He has exhibited at the ICA London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Gimpel Fils, Mayor and Intoxica Galleries, London; and Exit Art and Noiseville Galleries, New York. He has also published numerous books, comics and collections of his work. He is resident illustrator of music magazine The Wire.

This exhibition is sponsored by The Wire as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations.
