96 Gillespie & The Wire present Creatures of the Night by Savage Pencil

96 Gillespie presents our first solo showing of veteran London based illustrator Edwin Pouncey aka Savage Pencil. Entitled 'Savage Pencil presents ... Creatures of the Night' this body of work furthers the artist’s interest in the imagery and iconography of Black Metal and the occult.

This exhibition features a range of new large paintings in which Pouncey's characteristically frantic and supernatural figures are cast as creatures of some terrrifying night. This output follows an intense period of method artmaking - in which Pouncey attempts to enter a trancelike state – his artwork flowing in a visual stream of consciousness, fuelled by Black Metal music.

In Creatures of the Night, Pouncey feeds off a human preoccupation with death and aligns it with the symbolism of the occult. Fur and wings abound along with calligraphic typography, hidden messages and ciphers summoned from the subconscious, bringing the audience face to face with our collective nightmares. That these creatures of the night figure in the folklores of so many cultures gives them a resonance beyond the cult followers of Black Metal.

'A big dog with very broad feet - some say webbed feet - shaggy hair, drooping ears, and eyes as large as saucers. It walked with a loud "splashing" sound that made the flesh creep of those that heard it; and the gleam of its saucer eyes transfixed anyone unlucky enough to see them'.

'A hound it was, an enormous coal-black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open mouth, its eyes glowed with a smouldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame. Never in the delerious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish be
conceived than that dark form and savage face which broke upon us out of the wall of fog'

(Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from The Hound of the Baskervilles)
