AARON CANTOR, FRITZ WELCH

Fungal Hex

29.10.-16.11. 2001

"Fungal Hex" is a collaborative installation by Brooklyn, New York artists Aaron Cantor and Fritz Welch, guitarist Stephen O'Malley, and writer, Rylan Morrison. The exhibit opens on October 29 and runs through November 11, 2001.

Artists Statement:
Dissected vinyl, on which already manipulated drawings are traced upon, allow for the possibility of several or infinite levels upon the walls. Independent from combined efforts, as are the drawings, sculptures by Cantor protrude from the large-scale drawings into the space. The sculptures, though three dimensional, allude to the intangible conflicts of communication. Filling the space with sound waves are the ambient compositions designed specifically for the installation by O'Malley. The element of sound defines the possibility of the "extra-physical" within the space. This is a repeated promise of the show, also reflected on by the text supplement created by Morrison.

Aaron Cantor (Milwaukee, 1971) has lived and worked in the Brooklyn area since 1992. He has exhibited in the New York and Minnesota area, from where he was born. Often using recognizable technological icons (airplanes, alien spacecraft, dot-matrix graphics, etc.), his work reflects on the anxieties and promises brought upon buy the pace of contemporary society and technological developments.

Fritz Welch (Houston, 1969) has already begun to make a name for himself in the small circle of young and coming American artists. Welch fuses his love of contemporary youth culture and icons with his interest in sound, installation and painting, resulting in works of emotional and visual power. Growing up in America during the mass-media explosion of the 70s thought the 90s; which saw the rise of digital technology and hyper-availability of images, sounds, and ideas, Welch appropriates these stimuli into sight-specific, post-expressionistic installations.

FUNGAL HEX reissue

1007-1.jpg

from Aurora Borealis

FUNGAL HEX
self titled double picture disc.

With this instalalltion based piece, Stephen O'Malley (SUNN O))), KHANATE, GINNUNGAGAP) displays a more mellow, experimental side, with each track consisting of drones, ambient waves and subtle guitar work. Eerie scraping sounds drift in and out, and the general feel is unsettling. This work represents a very different side to the volume based, mammoth drones of SUNN O))).

More details can be gleaned here.

Consists of 4 tracks spread over 2 picture LPs in a vellum sleeve. Limited to 500 pieces.
