The Tavis Smiley Show, September 23, 2004 · If jazz legend John Coltrane has disciples -- musical or otherwise -- chief among them would be his widow, Alice Coltrane.
Alice Coltrane, now 67, met her husband when they were both touring jazz musicians -- she was a noted bebop jazz pianist and classically trained musician. She shared with her husband a passion for both music and the spiritual side of human experience. At one point, she joined her husband's famed quartet on piano, replacing jazz great McCoy Tyner.
When her famous husband died of liver cancer in 1967, Alice Coltrane became a fierce guardian of his vast musical estate. She was also left with the task of raising their four children. She continued with a string of well-received albums, but quit the jazz world in 1978.
Now, after a 26-year hiatus, Alice Coltrane is back with a new CD, Translinear Light. The title is a play on the Coltrane name, and also a nod to Alice Coltrane's deep spirituality.
"Look at what trance means," she tells The Tavis Smiley Show producer Roy Hurst. "It means to transcend... it means to become transcendental! So if we get a singular transcendental path of light, that could lead to such great dimensions of consciousness, of revelation, of spirituality, of spiritual power."
Alice Coltrane will join her son Ravi Coltrane and artists Savion Glover and Branford Marsalis in a concert to benefit the John Coltrane Foundation on Sept. 30 in Los Angeles.

Seldon Hunt's Chocolate Brownies Recipe
175 grams of butter
1 cup of good quality choc chips or finely chopped chocolate
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
1 cup of white sugar
11/4 cups of flour
1/2 cup of chopped macadamias
1/2 cup of raisins (optional)
Preheat the oven to 180°C, 350°F or gas mark 4. Grease a sponge roll tin or oblong baking dish. Place macadamias on a baking tray and roast until light golden for about 8 minutes. Remove and allow to cool before roughly chopping the nuts. Using a double boiler or microwave, melt the chocolate. Melt the butter separately to avoid burning the chocolate. In a large bowl mix
together the melted butter, chocolate and vanilla. Set the mixture aside until it is lukewarm. Whisk the eggs and sugar into the mixture. Sift in the
flour and sprinkle over the raisins and nuts. Fold gently until the mixture is just combined. Pour into the greased dish and bake for 20 to 30 minutes
until the brownie is cooked around the edges, but still soft in the middle. Cool and cut into squares. Sprinkle with icing sugar if desired.
(Makes 12 large brownies)

MOOG hits theaters September 24
Press Contact: Gabriele Caroti
Bob Moog (b. 1934) has been inventing and building electronic musical instruments for nearly half a century. Still active in his workshop in rural North Carolina, Moog continues to shape musical culture with some of the most inspiring instruments ever created.
Moog explains that he "can feel what's going on in a piece of electronic equipment... it's something between discovering and witnessing."
And he is convinced that many musicians come to "feel" a circuit in a similar way. "They make contact." In fact, musicians make such strong emotional connections with the electronics inside a Moog synthesizer that Moog himself has reached cult hero status.
Moog has not only made prodigious contributions to modern music and culture, but he has become a character within an unfolding "American maverick inventor" mythology. Moog certainly walks and talks the "mad scientist" part, complete with the fly-away white hair, intense eyes, eccentric mannerisms and a head full of stories.
This feature documentary film – by filmmaker/musician Hans Fjellestad and the producer team behind Frontier Life (2003) – explores Moog's collaborations with musicians over the years, and his ideas about creativity, design, interactivity and spirituality. The film was shot on location in Asheville, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and London, featuring appearances by Keith Emerson, Walter Sear, Gershon Kinsgley, Jean-Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert, Rick Wakeman, DJ Spooky, Herb Deutsch, Bernie Worrell, Pamelia Kurstin, Tino Corp. with Charlie Clouser, Money Mark, Mix Master Mike, and an eclectic mix of performers.
Artists such as Stereolab, Meat Beat Manifesto, Tortoise, Money Mark, Luke Vibert & Jean-Jacques Perrey, 33, Moog Cookbook, Plastiq Phantom, Psilonaut, Bernie Worrell & Bootsy Collins, Roger O'Donnell, The Album Leaf, Pete Devriese, Bostich, Charlie Clouser, Baiyon, Suzanne Ciani, Gershon Kingsley, Doug McKechnie, Electric Skychurch and others are contributing original music produced on Moog instruments for the soundtrack.
Additional discoveries like vintage films borrowed from dusty private collections round out this stylized, wonderfully strange story of a true American maverick.
Theatrical release opens September 2004 and DVD release worldwide Spring 2005 – distributed by Plexifilm. The soundtrack CD is available now on Hollywood Records.

ROME (Reuters) - A 67-year-old woman was killed when a three-meter tall metal crucifix fell on her head in a small southern Italian town on Wednesday, police said.
The cross, which has been in the main square on Sant'Onofrio for decades, fell on Maddalena Camillo while workers were setting up lights for an annual religious festival.
Italy, home to the Vatican City, is a predominantly Roman Catholic country where crucifixes and religious icons and effigies are a common sight in most towns and villages.
