new ARTHUR mag!

ARTHUR NO. 7 * NOVEMBER 2003 * Out Oct. 15

Cover illustration by John Coulthart.

My Bloody Valentine's fluff-on-the-needle sound changed rock music forever. Then they disappeared. Ten years later, MBV's Kevin Shields explains almost everything. Text and photos by Hua Hsu.

This summer, underground psych bands Sunburned Hand of the Man, Comets On Fireand Six Organs of Admittance ventured across the continent in a traveling caravan of mindblowers. Tony Rettman reports live from the scene. Photos by Don
Harney, Mike Galinsky and others.

'SEX $75': Photography and text by Susannah Breslin.
"The men were gathered all around us in concentric circles. Finally, I got on my knees to get the shot of her I wanted. As the years went by, I saw sex everywhere I went. There were the sex stores and porn theaters on street corners. There were the words some prostitute had scrawled on the side of a building on Santa Monica Boulevard. It was everywhere, every time I turned my head. I saw sex everywhere I went. Nobody else appeared to notice."

In an exclusive excerpt from Chapel of Extreme Experience: A Short History of Stroboscopic Light, Flicker and the Dream Machine (Soft Skull) author John Geiger explains the role of the legendary Dream Machine in the consciousness exploration of the '60s by folks like Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs, Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley and Allen Ginsberg.

Never Mind SARS.
It could be worse, say doctors Brian Evenson and Steve Aylett in these excerpts from The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases (Night Shade Books). Introduction by Dr. Thackery T. Lambshead himself, with hugely appropriate illustrations by John Coulthart.

PINCHBECK talk

Daniel Pinchbeck
“Emit Time: 2012...A Change in How We Experience Time”

In the weeks leading up to Burning Man, we already knew that Daniel Pinchbeck's Palenque Norte conversation was going to be a big hit. Each day brought more email requests asking us to verify the day and time Daniel would be speaking. And we made some new friends during the week as people came by to double check. Obviously, Daniel Pinchbeck has a lot of fans who are burners!

As expected, Daniel's presentation was an intellectual tour de force. Even if you attended this talk in person, or heard it on Black Rock City's KPOD radio, you will want to hear this again. Without the distraction of the wind, heat, and dust, you will probably discover some pearls of wisdom you missed when you heard it the first time.

As you will see, we have broken the MP3 files of this conversation into chunks to make it easier to download and listen to the parts that most interest you. Daniel and Palenque Norte welcome you to download and listen to Daniel's entire presentation, but we do ask that you observe the following copyright notice.
